Solving grid congestion without waiting for the grid operator

Why your connection cannot be made heavier, what that costs, and which four routes are open to you.

You apply for a heavier connection and are told it is not possible, or that it will take years. That is no longer an exceptional case: across much of the Netherlands the grid is at its limit and there is a waiting list.

The awkward part is that the problem is usually not that you use too much electricity. It is that you want to draw too much at one moment.

Where it goes wrong: the quarter of an hour, not the year

Your contracted capacity is not an annual budget. It is the upper limit of what you may draw at any moment, and grid operators settle per quarter of an hour.

That means one quarter of an hour per month decides your bill, and that a single twenty-minute peak can block your entire expansion. Businesses that know their annual consumption but not their peak find out only when the application is refused.

Route 1: distribute what you already have

The cheapest intervention and usually the first. Once charge points, machines and refrigeration can no longer all run at once uncontrolled, the peak disappears without anything having to be added.

With charging infrastructure this is nearly always enough to go from a few points to eight or ten. Without balancing, every point draws what it can and the third car is enough to trip the main fuse.

Route 2: buffer

A battery between the grid and your installation. It tops itself up during the quiet moments and delivers the peak when it comes. The grid sees a flat line; you have the capacity.

This is the route that makes fast charging possible on an existing connection, and the reason projects that could not be done on paper go ahead in practice.

What it costs depends on how large and how long your peak is. That can be measured, and that measurement decides the size of the system. A battery bought too large never pays for itself.

Route 3: shift

Sometimes the answer is that nothing has to be installed. If the peak arises because three processes happen to coincide, moving one of them by half an hour is the cheapest solution there is.

That sounds too simple to be true and it happens more often than you would think. All it requires is knowing where the peak comes from, and that is exactly what most businesses do not know.

Route 4: share

On a business park every company has its own contracted capacity, while the peaks rarely coincide. Added together there is more room than anyone has separately.

Technically that is entirely feasible. What it runs aground on is the agreements: who pays, who owns it, and what happens when a participant leaves. Allow more time for that than for the installation.

What you do first

Measure. Not your annual consumption, but your consumption per quarter of an hour over a month at least.

Without that figure every solution is a guess, and the most expensive mistake in this field is buying an installation that solves the wrong problem. How that measurement works is under energy monitoring; what comes out of it decides which of these four routes fits you, and sometimes the answer is that you need none of them.
